SSF Life
  • Share a room/bathroom — Every resident in an undergraduate house shares a room and bathroom. Residents in our graduate/medical houses have the benefit of a private room and share a bathroom with one other resident. A standard twin bed, a desk, chair, dresser, and closet will be supplied for every resident. Residents may decorate (but not paint) their rooms with posters and pictures.
  • Items residents need to bring — Residents will need to supply their own laundry detergent, personal hygiene items, and linens.
  • Convenience Items — Bike, stereo with headphones, portable fan, study lamp, computer, TV (cable is not available in the rooms), VCR and DVD. You should bring food for the first week until the Business Managers have a budget established to purchase food for the house.
  • Room Assignments — The Head Resident of your assigned scholarship house is responsible for room assignments. Returning residents will choose or be placed in their rooms based on the seniority rules set in the house. New residents will either be assigned to open spaces or may choose an open space depending on the house's rules.
  • Who is in charge? — Officers are elected by the residents of each house. The Head Resident presides over the house and is a part-time employee of Foundation. This person is generally an upper-classmen and has held numerous offices with the house. The Head Resident has weekly meetings with the Director of Student Affairs to discuss how the house is running; including budget, meals, residents, etc.
  • How much does it cost? — House bills average $950 per semester. The amount covers food, utilities, water, laundry facilities, cable, local phone service, pest control, fire monitoring, garbage pick-up, internet, and any expense the house deems necessary. The house bill is determined at the beginning of the semester based on the number of residents in the house at the time and the expense history of that house. The house bill may also be impacted by the current economy. Upon check-in, prior to moving in and prior to the resident receiving house keys, full payment of the semester house bill is expected.
  • Work Jobs/Cook and Clean Crew — In undergraduate houses, every resident will be assigned a work job (chore) to be completed twice a week. In addition, every resident will be assigned to a cook or clean crew one evening meal per week as per their schedule. The graduate/medical houses run a bit differently due to residents’ demanding schedules. Each resident typically prepares his/her own meals. Work jobs must still be completed, but they are easily adapted to individual schedules.
  • What are the amenities? — Every house has a fully furnished living room, dining room, kitchen, study room, and bedrooms. Each house also has a TV, computer, local phones, washers and dryers (You do not have to plug with quarters!), microwaves ovens, multiple refrigerators, and pest control service. In addition to a study room in each house, there is also a stand-alone study hall amid the FSU houses. It is equipped with couches, study areas, and wireless internet. Residents have access to the study hall 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • Parking — Residents must register their car with the SSF office within the first 2 weeks of the semester. The decal is valid for an academic year and parking is ample.
  • Fun Foundation Events — Your social chairs will plan numerous events within the house and the SSF Ambassadors and Foundation staff will plan several larger events:
    • Alumni Homecoming Events
    • Thanksgiving dinners
    • End of the semester event
    • Annual banquet for all campuses
    • Board member dinners
    • Ice cream social
    • Orientation
  • Service Opportunities:
    • Blood drives
    • Tutoring
    • Fund-raisers for community causes
    • "Senior" senior prom
